Historical Letterboxing and Hike Project

X marks the spot and ten paces to the east were clues on the treasure hunt map we followed when we were young. Letterboxing is a different kind of treasure hunt. Seekers of all ages follow clues, not to a “cache of jewels”, but to a stamp and log book in a box.

The Elma Chamber of Commerce and the Elma Timberland Library w ould like to ask for a Helping Hand to create a Historical Hike and Letterbox Trail in our “one grocery store” home town. Our inspiration is motivated by activities needed for visitors and local residents to stop and visit our town on their way to the coast or home from the beach.

Our vision is to create community partnerships, advance tourism and make Elma a destination for anyone who enjoys hiking, historical sights, letterboxing or visiting a small community just to relax.

The Elma Timberland Library already has two letterboxes cataloged in our library collection. These boxes have been visited by a number of letter boxers from across the country. Letter boxers seek clues at local sights, on the internet, or using GPS. It is very much like orienteering or geocaching simplified for all ages and technical levels to enjoy.
